Introduction: The Power of Faith in Action

Faith, while a powerful and necessary foundation, is often incomplete without action. Prayer is the starting point, but God not only wants us to pray, He wants us to act out in faith. The narrative of the lame man in John chapter 5 serves as a poignant reminder that divine intervention often requires human cooperation. Jesus’ command to the man to rise, pick up his mat, and walk is an imperative that underscores the symbiotic relationship between faith and action.

John 5: The Lame Man by the Pool of Bethesda

The account in John 5 of the healing at the Pool of Bethesda is a profound illustration of the transformative power of active faith. The story begins with Jesus encountering a man who had been lame for 38 years. This man had been waiting at the pool, a site believed to have healing properties, yet despite his long wait, he remained in his condition. When Jesus asked if he wanted to be made well, the man explained that there was no one to help him into the pool when the water was stirred. Instead of assisting him into the pool, Jesus commanded, “Pick up your mat and walk.”

Jesus’ instruction to the lame man was not merely a physical command but a call to move beyond passive faith into active obedience. The cultural and historical context of this story is significant. In the time of Jesus, the belief in the healing powers of the pool was widespread, and many people awaited their turn for a miracle. However, Jesus bypassed the expected method of healing, directing the man to take action himself. This directive underscores the importance of personal responsibility and the necessity of taking proactive steps in faith.

Drawing parallels to contemporary scenarios, many individuals today might find themselves feeling stuck or helpless, much like the lame man by the pool. Modern challenges, whether they are emotional, spiritual, or physical, can create a sense of paralysis. Yet, the story of the lame man’s healing teaches that waiting passively for change is not enough. Jesus’ command to “pick up your mat and walk” is a reminder that faith requires action. Just as the lame man had to take that first step, so too must we actively engage in our faith journeys.

Personal Anecdotes: Lauren’s Rescue Story from Jordan

In the fall of 1987 Lauren’s mother, Cathy, found herself in one of the most challenging situations of her life when Lauren was kidnapped by her father and taken to Jordan. It was a time when her faith was rigorously tested, not just in spirit but in tangible, real-world actions. Following the kidnapping Cathy spent days and weeks searching for help bur every phone call and every conversation ended with, “I am so sorry but we cannot help you get your daughter back”.

Beverly Lambert, Cathy’s friend, encouraged Cathy to get away from the every day chaos and spend time praying and fasting. Cathy took her friends advice she spent 3 days in a motel room fasting and praying asking God for help. The following week Cathy began to see God move in a mighty way. She met Al Zapanta during a meeting at the Dallas County Court House. Al worked for the stated department and he had an extensive military background. Al was willing to help Cathy and connect her with the men that had the expertise she would need to her Lauren back.

Lauren’s rescue story from Jordan is a powerful testament to the idea that faith must be accompanied by action. Her experience underscores that while prayer is powerful and God will speak to you through prayer you must also act out in faith. James 2:17-18 says Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Show me your faith without the work and I will show you my faith by my works.

Transformative Power of Faith and Prayer

In conclusion, the union of faith and action is a powerful combination that can help us overcome challenges and reach our fullest potential. By grounding ourselves in prayer and taking purposeful steps forward, we not only honor our faith but also actively participate in the unfolding of our God-given potential. Let us embrace this dynamic interplay of belief and action, and step boldly into the transformative power it offers.
